THE BLACK RACER (Sgt. Willie Walker)
Art by Francesco Francavilla

Continuing this BLACK SUPERHEROES HISTORY WEEK with another creation of King Kirby: BLACK RACER.

The Black Racer is one of the avatars of Death and was introduced in DC Comics’ NEW GODS by Kirby (writer and artist) in his NEW GODS #3 in July, 1971.
The corporeal form of Black Racer is that of paralyzed Vietnam War Sgt Willie Walker, who accepted the role to collect the New Gods at the moment of their deaths.

Black Racer’s transportation device looks to be some sort of special skis (same way for Silver Surfer’s board), which is the reason I included him in the Super Olympics last week: it was really a no-brainer ;)

Tune in tomorrow for more Black Superheroes!

Cheers,
FF
